A nature lovers paradise on the Langebaan Lagoon

Langebaan Lagoon, Western

Situated within the West Coast National Park, this cottage is a real escape from the hectic pace of city life. It is completely off the grid using only solar energy and will appeal to anyone wanting to relax to the rhythm of the lagoon tide.

The space

You may find eland grazing right next to the cottage and black-shouldered kites and kestrels perching nearby.
It is a nature lovers paradise, especially birders who will be treated to thousands of waders that migrate to this World Heritage site in the summer months. During the months of August and September there is an explosion of colours when the daisies come out.
The beach, which is a short 5 minute stroll away has white sand and the water is clear and blue and safe for swimming. It also warms up in the lagoon so is much warmer than the sea!
We ask all guests to respect the peaceful and tranquil environment and to cause no disturbance to the plants, animals and the few people that they will encounter during their stay.
The house has lovely views from the verandah... which is probably where you will spend most of your time! During winter there is lovely big wood burning heater that heats the living area beautifully. Nothing like getting comfy on the couch in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of red!
Just to mention this place is wonderful for kids, but may not suit very young children. There are steps and drop-offs around the verandah so you will need to keep a beady eye on toddlers. Also the bedrooms are not connected and on opposite sides of the large verandah.
You are in a National Park so you may have close encounters with animals including snakes. One does not see snakes often but just be cautious when walking through the bush especially during the summer months. Always keep a look out.

Guest access

Entry and exit times to the West Coast national Park are determined by the conservation officers. These times change during the year:

Gate Times:
1 April to 31 August: 07:00 - 18:00
1 September to 31 March: 07:00 - 19:00

Outside of these times you will not be allowed into the park and will have to find alternative accommodation so please ensure you arrive in time.
Please remember that you will have to pay the normal Park entry fee.
Bring your WildCard if you have one.
Currently R50 per adult ( R75 in August and September, the flower season)
R25 for children ( R35 in flower season)
Foreign passport holders usually pay R75/37 and R150/75 in August/September)

Its about 100km from Cape Town and usually takes just over 1 hour to get there to the gate.
Add on at least 30 mins if you travelling during the week when the traffic leaving Cape Town will add travel time.

Other things to note

This cottage is an escape from your normal life and you will return feeling rested and revived. There are NO SHOPS or restaurants nearby. You need to take EVERYTHING with you, including drinking water. There is a rain water tank for emergencies. It is entirely off the grid, power comes from solar panels and gas heats the water. These systems are very well maintained but please be aware that if they do give any problem it may be difficult for us to get a maintenance team there over a weekend. We have never had an issue but just need you to understand this is a remote destination.
The house is very well equipped. All linen is provided including bath and beach towels, cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, firewood, braai-grids, matches and firelighters. There is an average sized fridge with a small freezer so we suggest a cooler box with ice to help keep drinks cold! Gas will provide hot water but please be mindful of the scarcity of water in this environment. There is also soap and loo paper!
There is no WiFi but there is 3G cellular reception.

Reviews

The most stunning location we have ever visited!

“The location of this place is one of the most stunning ones my family and I ever visited. That said the weather also was perfection ! very lucky. The house is comfortable and very much designed for outdoor living. If you are planning to go with kids, I would recommend you inquire about the layout of the bedrooms as it may not suit younger children. We went with friends and had 4 children from 8 to 12 years old and it was absolutely perfect.. we all had such an amazing time. ”
